Does Beef Tallow Help Wrinkles? An Honest Answer, Plus How to Use It on Mature Skin

Does beef tallow help with wrinkles? Yes, but not the way a retinoid does. Grass-fed beef tallow won't erase deep lines or rebuild lost collagen. What it does well is restore the fats that aging skin steadily loses, lock moisture in so fine lines look softer and less crepey, and calm the dryness and irritation that make mature skin look older than it is. Most people notice softer, plumper-looking skin within a few weeks. Deep creases and sagging are a different problem, and no balm fixes those on its own. Below is what the research shows, what tallow can't do, and how to use it on mature skin for the best results.

Does beef tallow actually help wrinkles?

Tallow helps the look of fine lines, mainly by repairing and moisturizing the outer skin barrier. That is a real benefit, because a lot of what reads as "wrinkles" on dry, mature skin is dehydration: thin, papery lines that soften as soon as skin holds water again.

The research on tallow itself is still small. A 2024 scoping review in Cureus found that tallow is made mostly of oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, contains vitamins A, D, E and K, and shows clear moisturizing benefits. The same review also noted that very few studies have tested tallow directly on human skin, and none have measured wrinkles specifically. So the honest answer is: tallow is well suited to aging skin based on what it's made of and how skin ages, but no clinical trial has yet put it head to head against an anti-aging cream.

Why does skin wrinkle faster after 50?

Two things happen at once. Deep in the skin, collagen production slows while the enzymes that break collagen down become more active. At the surface, the skin barrier runs low on the fats that hold it together.

  • The barrier gets fragile. In a 1995 study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the skin barrier of people over 80 broke down after about 18 tape strips, compared with about 31 for people in their 20s. The researchers traced this to a shortage of all the key lipids in the outer skin layer.
  • Sun-damaged skin loses its natural fats. A 2010 study in the Journal of Dermatological Science found significantly lower levels of free fatty acids and triglycerides in the outer skin of sun-aged and UV-exposed skin, along with reduced activity in the genes that make those fats.

Triglycerides and fatty acids are exactly what tallow is made of. That is the core reason it suits mature skin.

How does tallow support aging skin? (4 ways)

1. It replaces the fats aging skin runs low on

Your skin barrier is a wall of cells held together by fats. As that fat supply drops with age and sun exposure, the wall leaks moisture and lines deepen. Tallow is rich in the same saturated and monounsaturated fats found in human skin oils, so it fills those gaps rather than sitting on top as a film.

2. It locks in moisture so fine lines look softer

Most lotions are mostly water, which evaporates and can leave skin drier than before. A concentrated tallow balm has no water to evaporate. It seals in your skin's own moisture, which plumps the surface and softens the crepey look of dehydration lines. In one emulsion study covered by the Cureus review, tallow on its own had the strongest moisturizing effect of the blends tested.

3. It delivers fat-soluble vitamins in their natural form

The Weston A. Price Foundation has long argued that skin depends on the fat-soluble vitamins found in animal fats. In Skin Deep, Sally Fallon Morell calls vitamins A and D the first priority for healthy skin, and describes rough, dry, prematurely aged skin as a classic sign of low vitamin A. Pasture matters here too. A 2010 review in Nutrition Journal found that fat from grass-finished cattle carries more carotenoids (the precursor to vitamin A), more vitamin E and more CLA than fat from grain-fed cattle.

4. It calms the dryness and irritation that make skin look older

Aging skin reacts more easily to harsh cleansers, cold air and fragrance-heavy products. Redness and flaking add years to a face. Tallow is gentle and simple, and the Cureus review describes a 78-person study where people with dermatitis and psoriasis reported that a tallow-based emulsion helped their skin.

What can't tallow do for wrinkles?

Tallow won't rebuild deep collagen the way a concentrated retinoid can. Tallow contains natural vitamin A, but in far smaller amounts than retinoid treatments. It also can't lift sagging caused by bone and fat loss in the face.

Grass-fed tallow balm Retinol cream Water-based lotion
Main job Restores barrier fats, seals in moisture Stimulates collagen Adds water to the surface
Fine, dry lines Softens their look within weeks Improves them over months Brief improvement
Deep wrinkles Limited effect Modest effect Little effect
Irritation risk Low (patch test first) Common: redness, peeling Depends on additives
Best for Dry, sensitive, mature skin Collagen loss, sun damage Light daily hydration

Tallow and retinoids are not rivals. Many people use a retinoid a few nights a week and tallow every day to keep skin comfortable while it adjusts.

What results can you realistically expect?

Dryness and tightness usually ease within days. Softer-looking fine lines and better texture tend to show up over four to twelve weeks of twice-daily use. Here is what two of our customers in their late 40s and 50s told us:

★★★★★

"I am 58 years old and noticing more wrinkles, sagging skin on my face & belly... After using tallow I have experienced reduced wrinkles on my face, more vibrant & firm skin on my face... My belly skin is firming up too."

Alicia, 58 · Verified Buyer · after one month, applied morning and evening
★★★★★

"I noticed my skin looking better within the first few days of using it, hardly any redness, and my face, neck and chest look younger (I'm 48)."

How do you use tallow on mature skin?

Fingertip lifting a small scoop of tallow balm, the right amount for mature skin
A pea-sized amount covers the face and neck.
  1. Patch test first. Apply a little to your inner arm or jawline and wait 24 hours.
  2. Start with less than you think. A pea-sized amount covers the face and neck. If it feels heavy, use less next time.
  3. Apply to slightly damp skin. Sally Fallon Morell notes in Skin Deep that water on the skin increases how much it absorbs. Pat your face after washing and apply while it's still a little damp.
  4. Warm it, then press it in. Melt the balm between your fingertips and press it into the skin rather than rubbing hard. Mature skin is thinner and bruises more easily.
  5. Use it morning and night. Alicia applied hers twice a day. Night is when the barrier does most of its repair.
  6. Don't stop at your face. The neck, chest and backs of the hands show age early and are often skipped.
  7. Be sensible in the sun. Tallow is not a sunscreen. The Weston A. Price Foundation's Vitamin A-mazing notes that too much UV lowers the skin's vitamin A, so moderate sun choices are wise. For more detail, see our step-by-step guide to using beef tallow on your face.

Frequently asked questions

Can beef tallow reverse wrinkles?

No. Tallow can soften how fine lines look by restoring moisture and barrier fats, but it doesn't remove established wrinkles or rebuild collagen the way a prescription or concentrated retinoid can.

How long does it take for tallow to help wrinkles?

Dryness often improves within a few days. Most people see softer-looking fine lines and smoother texture after four to twelve weeks of morning and evening use.

Can I use tallow with retinol?

Yes. Many people apply a retinoid at night and follow with a thin layer of tallow to ease the dryness and peeling retinoids can cause. If your skin becomes irritated, use the retinoid less often and check with your dermatologist.

Is grass-fed tallow better for anti-aging?

Grass-fed tallow carries more carotenoids (the precursor to vitamin A), more vitamin E and more CLA than tallow from grain-fed cattle, according to a 2010 review in Nutrition Journal. Those are the nutrients you want in a balm for aging skin.

Can I use tallow under my eyes?

Yes. Use a very small amount, pat it in gently and keep it out of the eyes themselves. The thin skin under the eyes is often where dehydration lines show first.

Will tallow clog pores on mature skin?

Most people with mature, dry skin don't have trouble with tallow. Using too much is the most common cause of a heavy, greasy feel. Start with a pea-sized amount and read more in Is Beef Tallow Good for Your Skin?
