Beef Tallow for Skin Before and After: What to Expect at 1, 4 and 12 Weeks

Beef Tallow for Skin Before and After: What to Expect at 1, 4 and 12 Weeks

Most people using beef tallow for their skin see changes in three stages. In the first week, skin usually feels softer and less tight. Somewhere between weeks 2 and 4, texture, flaking and redness start to settle. The bigger visible changes, like clearer-looking skin, a more even tone and softer fine lines, take about 8 to 12 weeks. That timing has a simple biological reason. Your outer skin takes roughly 47 days to fully renew itself, so the skin you see at week 12 has been built while you were using tallow.

Below we walk through what to expect at each stage, along with Roberta's real Day 1 and Day 90 photos.

What happens in the first week of using beef tallow?

The first week is about comfort. Tallow is a solid fat that melts at close to skin temperature, so it sinks in and helps hold moisture in your skin. Most people notice:

  • Less tightness after washing, especially on the cheeks and around the mouth
  • Softer dry patches on hands, elbows and knuckles
  • A calmer look on skin that tends to flush or get red

Tatum, a Noaic Balm customer with sensitive skin, put it this way:

★★★★★

"I use it as a facial moisturizer and I have sensitive skin that gets red very easily. I noticed my skin looking better within the first few days of using it, hardly any redness..."

Keep your expectations in check during week one. Your skin will feel better quickly, but it hasn't had time to renew itself yet.

What changes after 4 weeks?

By week 4, most people are close to finishing their first 2 oz jar, which lasts about 4 to 6 weeks with twice-daily use. This is the point where changes start to show in the mirror, not just in how your skin feels:

  • Flaky or rough texture looks smoother
  • Skin looks less dull, especially in the morning
  • For many people with breakout-prone skin, the first signs of calming appears

That last point matches what dermatologists say about any acne routine. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that a routine that is working should show "some improvement in 4 to 6 weeks," and that clearing can take two to three months or longer. Week 4 is when to check your progress, but it is too early to judge your final result.

What do beef tallow results look like at 12 weeks?

Twelve weeks is where real before and after photos come from. A 1994 study in the Journal of Dermatological Science put full epidermal turnover at about 47 to 48 days. By day 90, your skin has fully renewed itself almost twice while you've been using tallow.

Roberta's story shows this well. She had struggled with hormonal acne for decades. These are her photos from Day 1 and Day 90 of using our tallow balm.

"I have struggled with hormonal acne for decades. My skin immediately began to calm and heal with the tallow balm. I saw results within the first month, and clearer skin within 3 months."

Her timeline matches the stages above. She felt her skin calm right away, saw results in the first month, and had clearer skin by month three.

When What you may notice Why
Days 1 to 7 Softer feel, less tightness, calmer-looking redness Tallow's fats help hold moisture in the outer layer
Weeks 2 to 4 Smoother texture, fewer dry flakes, less dullness New cells are reaching the surface in a moisturized environment
Weeks 6 to 8 Clearer-looking skin, more even tone About one full epidermal renewal (around 47 days)
Weeks 10 to 12 The before and after difference, softer-looking fine lines Close to two full renewal cycles of consistent care

Why does grass-fed tallow work with your skin?

Tallow has been a skin salve for centuries. The Weston A. Price Foundation's article Traditional Nourishing and Healing Skin Care points to an 1866 household medical book by Dr. A.W. Chase that listed ten salve recipes, eight of them made with tallow. The same article explains why tallow works so well:

  • It resembles your skin's own fats. Tallow is about 50 to 55 percent saturated fat, much like the fats in human cell membranes. It also resembles sebum, the oil your skin makes on its own.
  • It carries fat-soluble vitamins. Tallow contains small amounts of naturally occurring A, D, E and K, which are found mainly in animal fats. These also come with all their important co-factors.
  • It contains palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid that WAPF writers credit with natural antimicrobial properties.

Grass-fed matters too. A fatty acid analysis funded by WAPF found that grass-fed tallow had an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 1.4, compared with more than 16 in grain-fed tallow. It also had 22 percent more oleic acid and 65 percent fewer natural trans fats. That study tested only one sample of each, so treat the numbers as a strong signal, not the last word. Large clinical trials on tallow skincare don't exist yet. Much of what we know comes from centuries of use, research on the fats themselves, and results like Roberta's.

Is it normal to break out when you start tallow?

Some people get a few small bumps in the first 1 to 2 weeks. The most common cause is using too much product. A rich balm only needs a pea-sized amount for the whole face. Other causes come from applying it over unwashed skin, or a sensitivity to an added scent.

If you get bumps, use half as much, switch to the Unscented blend, and apply only at night for a week. Always patch test first on your inner arm for 24 hours. If breakouts keep getting worse after 2 weeks, stop using it. Tallow isn't right for every skin type. Our guide to using beef tallow on your face without clogged pores walks you through each step.

How do you get the best beef tallow before and after results?

  1. Take a Day 1 photo. Use the same window light, at the same time of day, with no makeup. Take another on Day 30 and Day 90. Skin changes slowly, and photos show what the mirror misses.
  2. Use less than you think. Warm a small scoop between your fingers until it melts.
  3. Apply to clean skin.
  4. Be consistent. Use it morning and night, every day. Results at 12 weeks depend on 12 weeks of use.
  5. Don't stack it with five other products. If you change everything at once, you won't know what made the difference.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to see results from beef tallow for my skin?

Most people feel softer, less tight skin within 1 to 7 days. Visible changes in texture and redness usually appear in 2 to 4 weeks, and the full before and after difference shows at 8 to 12 weeks. That's how long your skin takes to renew itself once or twice.

Can beef tallow reverse aging?

No skincare product can reverse aging. What tallow can do is keep skin well moisturized and support its natural barrier. Over 8 to 12 weeks, that can make fine lines look softer and skin look plumper and more even.

Why don't dermatologists like beef tallow?

Most dermatologists hesitate because there are few clinical trials on tallow skincare. They also worry that a rich fat could clog pores on some oily skin types. Those are fair points. On the other side are centuries of traditional use, a fat profile that resembles your skin's own natural oils, and many real before and after results. Patch test first and start with a small amount.

Does beef tallow clog pores?

For most people, a thin layer of well-rendered tallow does not clog pores. Breakouts usually come from using too much, applying over unwashed skin, or a reaction to added fragrance. If you're prone to breakouts, start with the Unscented blend at night only.

How long does one jar of tallow balm last?

A 2 oz jar of Standard Tallow Balm lasts about 4 to 6 weeks with morning and night use on your face. For a full 90-day before and after, plan on 2 to 3 jars, or subscribe and save 15%.
